Historical Significance
This current capitol of Illinois is the 6th capitol building since Illinois's establishment of statehood in 1818. The first legislative session in this building was held in 1877.
Cultural Significance
The current capitol is architecturally similar to styles seen during French Renaissance. Designed by Cochrane and Garnsey, an architecture and design firm based in Chicago, Illinois, the Capitol’s groundbreaking was on March 11, 1869, and it was completed twenty years later for a total cost of $4.5 million.
