Historical Significance

The Lincoln Tomb was dedicated in 1874 and is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary, and three of their four sons, Edward, William, and Thomas. The public receiving vault, constructed ca. 1860, which was the scene of funeral services for Abraham Lincoln on May 4, 1865 is also still standing. In 1960 the Tomb was designated a National Historic Landmark and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

Cultural Significance

Being able to visit Lincoln’s tomb has great meaning to all who go. Lincoln is one of the most loved presidents the United States has ever had, and being the home to his final resting place is very important for Illinois.
